Prince Dube’s 82nd-minute equaliser earned the Warriors a point against African Champions Algeria in a Group H Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played at the National Sports Stadium on 16 November.
It appeared like a repeat of the 3-1 defeat on 12 November when Algeria raced into a nil lead through Delort and Mahrez’s 34th and 38th-minute goals. Captain Knowledge Musona halved the deficit in the 42nd minute when his free lick nestled into the top corner beyond a diving M’Bolhi. Moments before the goal, the captain had crashed the crossbar with another freekick.
Coach Logarušic made four changes at half time, bringing in Divine Lunga, Ovidy Karuru, Kudakwashe Mahachi and Khama Billiat for Adam Chicksen, Tafadzwa Rusike, Jordan Zemura and David Moyo.
The game’s intensity increased and the Warriors dominated possession, creating chances but the equaliser remained elusive. Tinotenda Kadewere, Karuru and Musona went close to scoring but it took substitute Prince Dube’s first touch from a Divine Lunga header to beat M’Bolhi.
On 82 minutes, Dube replaced Tendayi Darikwa while Musona lined up to take a corner kick. When the ball was flighted in, Lunga flicked it towards Dube who made the perfect connection with his first touch and his shot caught M’Bolhi off guard. He went in over the line with it.
